A new Europe-Africa partnership

Session 33 Canal 2 July 5, 2020 10:30 - 11:30

Overview

“Sub-Saharan Africa has many strengths and chronic challenges. (…) The collapse of economic activity as a result of containment measures, combined with macroeconomic instability, will increase poverty and endanger lives and livelihoods. ». These observations by the World Bank on the economic situation in Africa are certainly alarming, but not defeatist. Although the sanitary crisis has profoundly disrupted the economy of an already unstable continent, regional and international institutions are working to accompany and boost the economic reconstruction of Africa, in association with that of other continents. Thus, from the very beginning of the health crisis, a call was made for the cancellation of African debts, to support the continent’s resilience in the face of this unprecedented shock. More broadly, the bilateral and multilateral partners of these countries are aware of the incredible investment needed to revive growth in Africa, the locomotive of world growth, and therefore ultimately of the European and international economy.
