Culture, between polarization and standardization
Session 50
July 4, 2026
11:30 - 12:30
Overview
The homogenization of cultural forms - styles, tastes, aesthetics - is not a new phenomenon. However, it has intensified with globalization and then with the rise of algorithms, which amplify the dissemination of standardized content through the mechanism of virality. Culture thus tends to globalize, to smooth itself out, sometimes at the expense of its own singularities.
At the same time, an opposite movement is observed: individuals and sociocultural groups are retreating into their own referents, practices, and imaginations. This phenomenon generates distinct "cultural bubbles", within which experiences and tastes differ or even oppose each other head-on. Culture then becomes a space of cleavage as much as of sharing.
In this context, digital platforms occupy an ambivalent position: they contribute both to the standardization of cultural content on a global scale and to the fragmentation of audiences into communities with distinct sensitivities.
Therefore, the culture appears caught in a tension between uniformization and polarization. How, in this context, can the individual build a singular relationship with culture, assert his tastes and preserve a form of autonomy in the face of these contradictory dynamics? What are the political implications of this dual phenomenon?
