AI & Business: Reinventing Productivity?

Session 21 July 3, 2026 11:00 - 12:00

Overview

Artificial intelligence can have two effects on employment depending on whether jobs are substitutable or complementary. For a number of tasks (coding, translation, legal services, distribution and logistics), AI and employment are likely to be substitutable. The development of AI tends to increase productivity while reducing the need for labor.
For others (medicine, consulting, information), it is reasonable to think that work and AI are complementary: the introduction of artificial intelligence will enhance the efficiency of tasks without destroying jobs.

Finally, jobs that require human interaction (healthcare, social services, education, tourism, restaurants) will be only slightly affected by the introduction of AI.
Available data for the United States is consistent with this view: total employment is stagnating; it is declining in industry, trade, transportation, and information, while it is growing in healthcare and education. How does the integration of AI influence (or not) the success of companies?
