Overview
The digital economy has caused a lot of loss of revenue for the media: platforms first came to offer print media readers partial content (a title and a few lines of an article), but free. Massively attracted, readers have reduced their purchases to the number and subscriptions. Advertisers tracked their audience and focused their space purchases on these platforms. These companies, which have become quasi-monopolistic on advertising intermediation services, have absorbed a growing share of advertisers' expenses at the expense of the media. The audiovisual media have also suffered disaffection for their advertising spaces.
At the same time, social networks push without hierarchy, thanks to their algorithms, verified information, produced by the media, and misleading content, results of interference or influencers without much concern for reality.
This combination leads to many media being bought by industrial groups, which raises the question of the independence of the editorial offices from the private interests of these shareholders.
How to restore a viable business model for the media? How can we encourage citizens to turn away from misleading content and demand honest, verified information and pay for it? How to adapt regulation to the new digital world?
