How to Promote the Growth of a New Middle Class ?
Overview
Today, in a time of profound transformation, should we speak of the middle class in the singular or the plural? Does it or do they still exist? What are the consequences of their evolution?
In both the United States and France, economic dynamism is now largely driven by the highest-income groups. This consumption dynamic is partly the result of growing wealth inequalities. In France, the top 10% held 41% of total wealth in 2010; by 2023, this figure had risen to 50%. In the United States, the top 1% of households held 32% of total wealth in 2025.
How can the current dynamic be reversed, and growth reshaped so that it no longer relies primarily on the consumption of the wealthiest households?
Developing jobs that match middle-class qualifications, leveraging AI, and expanding access to high-yield financial products (such as publicly traded equities and private equity) are among the avenues worth exploring.
