Gerhard CROMME

Chairman of the Supervisory Board - Siemens AG

Gerhard Cromme was born in Vechta on February 25, 1943. He is married and has four daughters.

Professional experience :

Mr. Cromme started his career at the French Com­pagnie de Saint-Gobain group in 1971. He served in various positions and was ultimately appointed Deputy Delegate General of the group for the Federal Republic of Germany. In 1986, Mr. Cromme joined the Krupp Group in Germany. From 1989, he served as Chairman of the Executive Board of the Group holding company. Following the merger with Thyssen in 1999, Mr. Cromme became Chairman of the Executive Board of the newly formed ThyssenKrupp. He led the company until 2001 and subsequentely served as Chairman of its Supervisory Board until 2013. At present, Mr. Cromme is Chairman of the Supervisory Board of Siemens AG.

Other offices and activities :

  • In past years, Mr. Cromme served as member of the supervisory boards of Compagnie de Saint-Gobain, Allianz SE, Deutsche Lufthansa AG, E.ON AG, BNP Paribas S.A., Suez S.A., Volkswagen AG, ABB Ltd., Thales S.A. and Axel Springer AG.
  • From 1991-2000, Mr. Cromme was Vice President of the Federation of German Industries (BDI). From 2001-2005, he served as Chairman of the European Round Table of Industrialists (ERT).
  • From 2003-2007, Mr. Cromme was Chairman of the Supervisory Board of the European School of Manage­ment and Technology (ESMT) in Berlin.
  • From 2001 to 2008, Mr. Cromme was Chairman of the Government Commission on the German Corporate Governance Code. In this capacity, he was also a member of the European Corporate Governance Forum.
  • Mr. Cromme co-presided the Franco-German working group “Competitiveness and Growth,” whose final report was submitted to President François Hollande and Chancellor Angela Merkel in 2013.

Education :

Mr. Cromme studied law at Münster University and Lausanne University and economics at the Sorbonne and at Harvard University (PMD). He earned a doctorate in law at Münster University.

Decorations :

Mr. Cromme holds the Commander’s Cross of the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany (“Großes Verdienstkreuz des Verdienst­ordens der Bundes­repub­lik Deutschland”). For his engagement in Franco-German relations, he was appointed Commander of the Legion of Honor by the French President in 2002.
