Bio


The New York–raised stage director and writer Ted Huffman studied humanities at Yale before gaining his first professional experience through the Merola Program at the San Francisco Opera. His productions have received numerous awards and nominations, including the Olivier Awards, the International Opera Awards and the Opernwelt Awards. He has recently directed Eugene Onegin at Covent Garden, the world premiere of We Are the Lucky Ones by Philip Venables at the Dutch National Opera in Amsterdam—of which he also wrote the libretto—The Cunning Little Vixen at the Berlin State Opera, Werther at the Opéra-Comique, Otello at the Opéra national du Rhin and Tosca at the Glyndebourne Festival. He was invited to attend Academy of the Festival d’Aix-en-Provence in 2012. Since then, he has directed five productions there: Les Mamelles de Tirésias (2013), Svádba (2015), The Coronation of Poppea (2022), The Faggots and Their Friends Between Revolutions (2023), and The Story of Billy Budd, Sailor (2025). He began his mandate as General director of the Festival d’Aix-en-Provence in January 2026.
