Bio
In January 2026, Sophie Magennis was appointed Representative of United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) to France, Monaco and the Council of Europe.
Prior to her appointment, she was Head of UNHCR’s Liaison Office to the EUAA in Malta, managing the relationship between UNHCR and EUAA. She served as Head of Policy and Legal Support at UNHCR’s Representation for EU Affairs in Brussels from 2015 to 2022. Prior to joining UNHCR in 2009, she worked with National Human Rights Institutions, NGOs, the Council of Europe in Strasbourg and with the Irish Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
She is a qualified lawyer and an alumnus of the European Inter-University Centre in Venice
