Bio


PhD from the University of Technology of Compiègne and civil engineer from the Mines de Nancy, Philippe Baptiste also holds an MSc from the University of Strathclyde in Glasgow, a DEA obtained at Sorbonne University, as well as an accreditation to supervise research.

In 1999, he joined the CNRS as a researcher, then the IBM Watson Research Center from 2000 to 2001. Philippe Baptiste also taught at École Polytechnique from 2002 to 2012, where he headed the computer science laboratory. In addition, he created the Institute of Information Sciences and their Interactions.

In May 2013, he joined the Ministry of National Education as head of the strategy and innovation department at the Directorate General for Research and Innovation. In 2014, he became Deputy Chief Executive Officer of CNRS.

Scientific Director then CTO of the Total group from 2016 to 2017, and “Partner and Director” at the Boston Consulting Group in 2020, he joined the Ministry of Higher Education and Research in May 2017 as chief of staff to Minister Frédérique Vidal. In November 2019, he joined Prime Minister Édouard Philippe as an advisor.

Since 2021, Philippe Baptiste had held the position of President of CNES, the French National Centre for Space Studies.

Philippe Baptiste was appointed Minister in charge of Higher Education and Research under Élisabeth Borne, Minister of National Education, Higher Education and Research, on 23 December 2024 in the government of François Bayrou.

On 12 October 2025, on the proposal of Sébastien Lecornu, Prime Minister in charge of ecological and energy planning, the President of the Republic appointed Mr Philippe Baptiste Minister of Higher Education, Research and Space.
