Bio
Smt. Nirmala Sitharaman is an Indian politician and a member of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). She was born on 18 August 1959 in Madurai, Tamil Nadu, to Shri Narayanan Sitharaman and Shrimati Savitri. She holds a Master's degree in Economics (M.A.) and an M.Phil., having studied at Seethalakshmi Ramaswamy College in Tiruchirapalli, Tamil Nadu, and Jawaharlal Nehru University in New Delhi.
She began her public service career as a Member of the National Commission for Women from 2003 to 2005. In 2008, she joined the BJP National Executive, and from 2010 to 2014, she served as the party's National Spokesperson.
In 2014, Nirmala Sitharaman entered the Union Government as Minister of State in the Ministry of Finance and Minister of State in the Ministry of Corporate Affairs. The same year, she was elected to the Rajya Sabha, the upper house of the Indian Parliament, representing the state of Andhra Pradesh. From 2014 to 2017, she served as Minister of State (Independent Charge) for the Ministry of Commerce and Industry.
She was re-elected to the Rajya Sabha in 2016, representing the state of Karnataka, and in 2017 she was appointed Minister of Defence, serving until 2019. Since 2019, she has served as Minister of Finance and Minister of Corporate Affairs, retaining these portfolios following her re-election to the Rajya Sabha in 2022. On 10 June 2024, she was reappointed to continue serving as Minister of Finance and Minister of Corporate Affairs in the Government of India.
