Karien VAN GENNIP

Bio


Karien van Gennip alternated between politics and business in her professional life. Until 2024 she served as the Minister of Social Affairs and Employment and deputy Prime Minister of the Netherlands. Today she holds non executive positions at ASML, London based start up ConquerAI, the European Council on Foreign Relations, the Royal Dutch Orchestra and the Committee on Corporate Governance in the Netherlands, and several other non for profits. Karien has a passion for inclusion, a belief in the power of innovation, the role of business to drive change, and a keen interest in geo-economics. She worked and lived in the USA, France and the Netherlands. Karien started her career at McKinsey&Company in Amsterdam and San Francisco. She served as the Minister for Foreign Trade and was a member of Parliament. After, she joined ING, where she led Private Banking and was the CEO of ING France. Subsequently, Karien served as the CEO of VGZ, the second largest health care insurer in the Netherlands. She has served on various for profit and non for profit boards, including as vice chair of the International Chamber of Commerce, la Co-Presidente de Financi’Elles, INSEAD, OranjeFonds and TomTom.
Karien holds a degree in Physics from Delft University of Technology, and an MBA from INSEAD. She was elected Young Global Leader by the WEF and is an Officier in de Orde van Oranje Nassau and a Chevalier de la Legion d’honneur. She is married with four daughters.
