Can Information Survive the Algorithm ?
Session 22
Amphi 2
July 3, 2026
11:30 - 12:30
Overview
A field experiment conducted in 2023 on Elon Musk’s X platform examined the online behavior of active U.S. users when the news feed switched from a chronological format to an algorithmic one. Users were steered toward more conservative viewpoints. The algorithm devalues posts from traditional media, highlights certain messages, and renders others virtually invisible.
Numerous studies have yielded similar results. This session will assess and explore the mechanisms and threats posed by what might be termed “algorithmic imperialism” over our information and thought systems, particularly as it operates within democracies during pre-election periods.
