Wealth of Nations : Should We Change Our Economic Indicators?

GED 1 Amphi 7 July 2, 2026 16:00 - 17:00

Overview

If the relevance of traditional tools for measuring economic performance, first and foremost GDP, have long structured public analysis and action; they now appear insufficient to address contemporary issues: ecological transition, social inequalities, well-being or the sustainability of growth. From then on, the question is no longer only technical, but deeply political: what do we choose to measure, and for what purpose?

In the face of the climate emergency, social tensions and labor changes, new indicators are emerging, integrating natural capital, well-being or resilience. However, their adoption raises methodological issues, international comparability and appropriation by decision-makers. This session aims to question the capacity of these tools to truly transform public and private action, and to redefine economic priorities in terms of more sustainable and inclusive development.
