Has Our Health System Lost its Grandeur?

Session 20 Amphi 5 July 3, 2026 10:30 - 11:30

Overview

In 2000, the World Health Organization placed France at the top of the podium in its global ranking of countries on the performance of their healthcare systems. This actually reflected the fact that health outcomes in France were quite good, despite a lower general level of education than in other comparable countries. The healthcare system was therefore considered to be very efficient, since it managed to compensate for this low level of education. The impact of this ranking questioned the value of potential reforms; since the system had been recognized as the best in the world, it seemed useless.

However, difficulties remain: notably in access to primary care in rural or peri-urban areas; in the attractiveness of health professions, particularly at the public hospital; or in reducing the strong inequalities in health between territories or between populations... What investments, policies, and strategies are needed to recover or rather improve our health system?
