How Will Europe Inspire the World ?
Despite the difficulties encountered by the European integration project, such as Brexit or some regional instabilities, and despite the painful progress in the creation of common policies on immigration, defence or the budget, Europe still holds a central position on the global geopolitical scene. It seems, however, increasingly threatened by China, Russia and the United States. How can Europe, which is slowed down by a decision system involving 27 countries, maintain its influence and preserve its values?
The European model remains a unique example of an inter-state union which goes way beyond the framework of free trade. Its institutions represent an undeniable source of inspiration with respect to political stability, protection of citizens, promotion of human rights, social model or sharing of wealth between its member states. In order to maintain its pioneer status and fight non-liberal democracies, the European Union must constantly be rethought. How can one reconcile the strategic priorities of 27 countries? Does the EU foreign policy truly carry weight on a strategic level? Can the Europe of defence revive the European unification trend? Does Brexit represent a precedent, or will it vaccinate the member states against any vague desire to exit?
