Bio
Dimitar Kovachevski, PhD Former Primer Minister of North Macedonia Member of Parliament of North Macedonia Dimitar Kovachevski served as Prime Minister of North Macedonia from January 2022 until January 2024. Before that he served as Deputy Minister of Finance from September 2020 until January 2022. From March 2020 until September 2020, he was part of the Economic Council of the Government of North Macedonia to deal with economic consequences caused by the COVID-19 virus pandemic. From December 2021 until June 2024, he was President of the Social Democratic Union of Macedonia, political party associate member of the Party of European Socialists. As of May 2024 he is member of the Assembly of the Republic of North Macedonia. Dimitar Kovachevski is Doctor of Economics, Professor at the School of Business Economics and Management at the University American College Skopje. He is lecturer and author of numerous scientific papers in the field of economics and management published in international scientific journals and conferences. During his more than 25 years professional career he has held high executive managerial positions in Makedonski Telekom member of Deutsche Telekom Group and A1 Macedonia member of Telekom Austria Group. He was also co-founder of a start-up high-tech company for production and development of elements for production of electricity from renewable sources. Under his leadership as Prime Minister, several key steps related to the European integration of North Macedonia took place. In July 2022, after 17 years of waiting, the negotiations of the Republic of North Macedonia with the European Union began where he personally led the Macedonian delegation, followed by immediate start of the process of bilateral screening which was successfully finished in December 2023. During his mandate as Prime Minister, he reached systemic agreements with the trade unions and other stakeholders on the methodology for growth of the minimum salary and the methodology for growth of pensions, intensified the energy transformation with a focus on the use of renewable energy sources, doubled the foreign direct investments and to decreased the unemployment rate in times of crises. In March 2023, Prime Minister Dimitar Kovachevski hosted a high-level meeting of the dialogue between Belgrade and Pristina led by the President of Serbia and the Prime Minister of Kosovo under the auspices of the European Union. Prime Minister Dimitar Kovacevski addressed the General Debate of the 77th United Nations General Assembly and in May 2023 was the first Macedonian Prime Minister to address the UN Security Council. In 2022 he held a lecture at the Columbia University within the framework of the Forum of World Leaders focused on the unique model of sustainable democracy of the Republic of North Macedonia, as well as the economic integration and transformation of the country. In 2023 delivered lecture at the Diplomatic Academy of Vienna on the topic of the start of the EU accession negotiations and the dynamics in the EU enlargement and he held a lecture at the Johns Hopkins University focused on the urgent need for economic development in the Balkans. In the past he worked on a series of international and domestic projects ranging from building capacity and innovation of services for sustainable local economic growth in North Macedonia, internationalization at home through online micro masters and virtual mobility, increasing the competitiveness of small and medium enterprises in the Republic of North Macedonia and online professional development program for innovative management, leadership and strategic communications.
