Bio
Aaja Chemnitz was born on 2 December 1977 in Nuuk. She was until recently a Greenlandic politician representing the party Inuit Ataqatigiit (IA) and has served as one of Greenland’s two representatives in the Danish parliament (Folketing) since 2015.
She is now working as a CEO, Strategic Executive Advisor and board member.
Before entering politics, Chemnitz worked extensively in public administration and child advocacy. She earned a degree in public administration from the University of Greenland (Ilisimatusarfik) and later completed executive education at INSEAD, Harvard Kennedy School, and Columbia Business School.
She worked for the Greenlandic government, the United Nations in New York on Indigenous peoples’ rights, and later held leadership roles in Nuuk Municipality and Kommuneqarfik Sermersooq. From 2012 to 2015, she served as Greenland’s Children’s Spokesperson (Børnetalsmand).
Chemnitz was elected to Greenland’s parliament, Inatsisartut, in 2014 and to the Danish Folketing in 2015. She became known for advocating children’s rights, social welfare, Arctic policy, and greater Greenlandic self-determination. Although she supports Greenlandic independence, she has argued that independence must be approached gradually and realistically.
She has also played a prominent role in Arctic and foreign policy debates, especially during renewed international attention on Greenland in 2025–2026.
