Biographie


Shekhar Shah is Director General of the National Council of Applied Economic Research, India’s oldest and largest, independent, economic think tank serving governments and industry. In this CEO role, he leads a team of researchers and analysts specialising in all aspects of the Indian economy and in scientific field data collection from households and firms.

During an earlier World Bank career spanning over two decades, he was the Bank’s South Asia Regional Economic Adviser, a principal author of the 2004 WDR Making Services Work for Poor People, Sector Manager for Public Economics for Europe/Central Asia, Bangladesh Lead Economist, and the Bank’s Deputy Research Administrator. He was the Ford Foundation’s South Asia Program Officer for Economics during 1984-89. He worked earlier on US banking and financial services with Golembe Associates in Washington DC, consulting for the US financial regulatory agencies.

Shah received his Economics BA from St Stephens College in New Delhi and an MA and PhD in Economics from Columbia University.
