Where Does France Stand In The World ?

Session 28

To round off our debates, we will attempt to establish France’s position in the world in relation to four complementary qualities: economic influence, of course, but also its diplomatic, military and cultural weight. Diplomatic power is certainly linked to economic force, and military might also depends on economic resources, as does the capacity to sway global governance or cultural influence. France’s current position is the outcome of long-term developments in these areas. The question raised during this concluding session therefore focuses on France’s standing in these four areas, together with its capacity to adapt to strengthen its position. We will review France’s diplomatic and military influence, the impact it has through its educational and cultural network, its place in global governance, the role of its innovative industries and their contribution to enhancing French industrial influence – all without moving abroad!
