Bio


Peter Ricketts was a British diplomat for 40 years. He spent much of his career dealing with international security issues and crisis management. He was Chairman of the Joint Intelligence Committee in 2000, UK Permanent Representative to NATO from 2003-6 and Permanent Under Secretary at the FCO 2006-10. He was appointed Britain’s first National Security Adviser by David Cameron in 2010 and set up the National Security Council to coordinate foreign and defence policy. He was British Ambassador to France from 2012 to 2016. After retirement from the public service, he was appointed a cross-bench member of the House of Lords, and now chairs the Lords European Affairs Committee. He is a Non-Executive Director of Engie, and of Getlink/Eurotunnel. He serves as Vice-Chairman of the Royal United Services Institute in London, Visiting Professor at King’s College London and President of the Normandy Memorial Trust. His book, Hard Choices: The Making and Unmaking of Global Britain, was published in 2022.
