From billions to trillions” : Financing Transitions in the Global South
Overview
South countries face a huge financial challenge: $2,000 of dollar per year by 2030 are necessary to finance energy transition, climate adaptation and sustainability. However, the current commitments are largely insufficient. The World Bank has achieved a record in climate financing of $42.6 billion by 2024, but the gap remains important.
Despite initiatives such as the Just Energy Transition Partnerships (JETP), financial flows are struggling to reach the required scale. How can private capital be mobilized in the face of perceived risks in these regions? Should multilateral banks be reformed to better channel funding? Should we strengthen public guarantees and develop new financial tools (blended finance, green bonds, SDRs)? Finally, how can we ensure that such financing benefits local populations and supports sustainable, inclusive growth?
