Reconciling Sustainability and Employment

Semi-plenary 02 Amphi 2 July 4, 2025 09:00 - 10:00

Overview

In line with the definition of sustainable development, the interdependence between environmental issues and economic dynamics is one of the pillars of the ecological transition. The necessary transformation of our societies to cope with climate change is bringing about profound changes in the organization of work, business sectors and will imply adaptative skills. While some jobs are set to disappear, particularly in high-carbon-emitting industries, many others may emerge or be transformed in so-called “green” sectors: renewable energies, thermal renovation, soft mobility, circular economy, sustainable agriculture. However, this transition is not neutral from a social point of view. If it is not anticipated and supported enough, it can exacerbate inequalities. For it to be fair, it is essential to link environmental and employment policies. This calls for targeted investment, an ambitious retraining strategy, and consultation with economic and social players. The ecological transition can thus become a lever for economic dynamism and social innovation, provided it is seen as a collective opportunity rather than a cost. It requires rigorous planning, a long-term vision and a strong commitment on the part of local authorities. Successfully reconciling these factors means ensuring both environmental sustainability and social cohesion.
