Towards the End of Cash ?
Overview
In December 2010, Eric Cantona called on the French to withdraw their money from banks so that the "system collapses". Although the operation was a failure, it reflects the fact that holding cash, in opposition to the scriptural money whose management we subcontract to banks, would therefore have a political character in addition to simple economic control.
Yet, today, in France as in Lebanon, a "bank run" has become impossible, either because restrictions are imposed or because "cash" is gradually disappearing from our habits, in favor of card payments, with or without contact, and other transactional alternatives. Even if half of transactions in France are still made with cash, could the digital economy, with its online business and digital currencies, sign the end of the fiduciary? What does this mean for the future of our commercial exchanges and for our individual autonomy?
