Joseph Upile Matola is a Malawian economist and acting Programme Head of the Economic Resilience and Inclusion Programme at the South African Institute of International Affairs (SAIIA). He joined SAIIA in April 2021 and has conducted research and policy engagements on various topics under the economic resilience and inclusion themes including socio-economic vulnerability, macroeconomic vulnerability and macroeconomic resilience. He has also researched and engaged in topics on development financing focusing on the role of the G20 in Africa’s efforts to resolving debt vulnerabilities. Prior to joining SAIIA, he served as Principal Economist in the Ministry of Finance and Economic Affairs in Malawi. Joseph holds a PhD in Development Economics from the National Graduate Institute for Policy Studies in Japan.
