Geopolitcs, what are the new bloc tectonics?

Session 4 Amphi 1 July 7, 2023 12:00 - 13:00

Overview

The year 2022 saw the acceleration of underlying trends that had already manifested themselves long before: a polarization of the world as a result of the growing rivalry between the United States and China, with the Indo-Pacific as the theater of global rivalries; simultaneously, new poles of influence have emerged: India, Turkey, Indonesia, Brazil, a new multipolarity that requires the reshaping of the world order. Between the Inflation Reduction Act, the Chips Act and the sanctions against China, the United States is navigating between national security and protectionism. How and who will define this new world order? What role for Europe in the face of the Chinese and American powers? Can we talk about European strategic autonomy when we are so dependent on the United States for military and energy? De-globalization, “friend-shoring”, the incentive to “buy national”: are we heading towards the fragmentation of international trade into blocks? What future for the World Trade Organization and what consequences for Europe?
