Latin America’s Voice in the South-South Dialogue

Long regarded as the United States' backyard, Latin America is seeking to assert an autonomous voice on the international stage. While economic, military and political relations remain profoundly asymmetrical, some countries, such as Brazil and Argentina, are demanding a more independent diplomacy, multiplying South-South partnerships or playing on the balance between great powers. However, this quest for autonomy comes up against a number of obstacles: internal political instabilities, structural economic dependencies, or diplomatic pressure exerted against a backdrop of growing rivalry, notably between Washington and Beijing. How far can Latin America emancipate itself from American influence without compromising its strategic interests? How can its main regional powers create a more collective dynamic towards sovereignty?
