China/USA/Russia: Where Should Europe Stand?
Session 17

16:15 - 17:15
Overview
Donald Trump’s plan is to place the US not at the top of the nations, but above all, even seeking to subdue its allies. Engaged in a conflict with China for world domination, this fight is not limited to military and political aspects, but includes the economy and new technologies, areas where Europe is losing ground. Indeed, Trump favours a transactional approach, where each country must offer quid pro quo in bilateral agreements, which destabilizes European multilateralism. Moreover, China and Russia are seeking to de-dollarize the world and establish a new world order. The European Union, faced with a world order in full reconstruction, is disoriented and vulnerable. How can the EU ensure its security and prosperity in a world where China and Russia are strengthening their power? How can it adapt to an increasingly aggressive US policy? Internal divisions, particularly between liberal and illiberal countries, further complicate the situation. Questions arise about the need for a European army, stronger cooperation between member states, or a strategic rapprochement with China to counter US hegemony.
