Session 15

Overview
It may seem that there is always an impossible choice between taxation to ensure more equality and redistribution on the one hand, and economic growth on the other. While we would like to use the tax system to curb rising inequalities, especially in wealth and inheritance, there is a danger that it will be detrimental to competitiveness and growth. France, like other rich countries, is in a difficult situation with rising deficits, growing inequality and declining growth. Can we find better solutions?
In this session, we will first examine whether the current fiscal situation calls for a tax hike to better finance public services and reduce the deficit. Next, we will discuss the continued increase in income and wealth inequality: should we not tax more to bring more equity? We will also look at the impact of the current tax system, which could slow down business competitiveness and economic growth. Finally, we will consider tax reforms that could be implemented to stimulate economic growth while ensuring greater social equity.
