Is France Too Divided to Unite?

Semi-plénière 05 Amphi 1 July 4, 2025 14:15 - 15:15

Overview

There is ample evidence of the importance of social, territorial and cultural divisions. Studies show the lack of common projects, the dislocation of the fundamentals of living together, common values, etc. These questions lead to the refusal of authorities, whether related to experience or competence. What can be the levers that would allow to recreate the link and restore trust between citizens and institutions? At least three can be mentioned: 1/ The quality of information in the face of fake news that pollute the democratic debate and maintain the polarization of society; 2/Education which must be more efficient (including its ability to promote republican values), and more effective in promoting genuine equality of opportunity; 3/ A better allocation of public expenditure which should make it possible to increase the quality of public services without increasing their costs.
