Renewable Energy: A Strategic Priority

Semi-plenary 09 Amphi 1 July 5, 2025 09:00 - 10:00

Overview

Almost half of Europe's electricity is generated by renewable energies - 47% to be precise. And other countries such as China, unlikely to sacrifice their competitiveness, have big ambitions, which installs more renewable energy capacity every year than the rest of the world. Why is this? Firstly, because demand for electricity is set to grow, with the electrification of uses linked to the energy transition, notably the electric car, but also with the increase in needs linked to digital and AI. Secondly, because alongside hydroelectric power, which has been generating electricity for decades, wind and solar power are competitive and offer a rapid response to growing demand. It's worth remembering that in France, the EPR2 reactors are not due to come on stream until 2038. The development of renewable energies also reduces dependence on imported fossil fuels. And flexibility solutions to cope with intermittency exist, both on the supply side (batteries, thermal power plants that need to decarbonize) and on the demand side (optimized usage, load shedding). So, instead of pitting energies against each other, can't we agree that renewables are a priority, and that speeding them up is a no-brainer?
