Overview
In the face of Donald Trump’s affronts, NATO’s cohesion and integrity are now shaken and economic and geopolitical divergences between the United States and Europe seem to weaken the idea of a united Western front. But if transatlantic solidarity is no longer there, while the emerging powers are waging trade and military battles, what will happen to the “Western bloc” and multilateral institutions such as the WTO or the UN? It would then seem that the opposition between the West and the rest of the world is more an outdated ideological construction than a persistent geopolitical reality.
Moreover, beyond the American isolationism, are not international value chains proof of our extra-political interdependencies (far from the logic of blocs)?
So how is the concept of the Western bloc no longer relevant today? What is the reality of the current geopolitical and economic recomposition?
