Overview
The social elevator is at the heart of many debates in France, Europe, and many other countries. It symbolizes the idea that anyone, regardless of their background, can rise in the social ladder through education, work, and the opportunities provided by society. However, this elevator is often said out of order, raising questions about its current effectiveness and its future. For a social elevator to function, several elements should be in place: dynamic economic growth, a labour market offering career development opportunities, professional support throughout life, and opportunities for continuous training. A fair distribution of value and a redistribution of national wealth are essential to guarantee true social mobility. However, policies implemented over several decades seem to have failed to unlock the situation. These discussions highlight issues of social justice and national cohesion. Can increasing inequalities, labour market transformations, and educational reforms influence upward mobility? What role can businesses, educational institutions, and civil society play in this process?
