Is Deregulation Unavoidable?

Overview

Deregulation has undoubtedly facilitated innovation and competitiveness, starting with the financial deregulation of the 1980s and the rise of digital platforms and the liberalization of energy markets. For examples, the liberalization of air transport has democratized travel, the opening up of financial markets has facilitated access to credit, while the deregulation of telecommunications has accelerated the digital revolution. However, these gains in growth have also generated imbalances, with financial crises, inequalities and concentration of economic power. The 2008 financial crisis encouraged regulators to introduce unprecedented safeguards, embodied by Basel III. The post-2008 consensus is now under threat. The DOGE project in the USA, the “chainsaw” in Milei’s Argentina: Are we entering a new era of deregulation, as we did in the 1980s? What would be the economic and social consequences? Is it inevitable?
