Does the risk society condemn progress?

Controversy 6 Amphi 3 July 8, 2023 15:45 - 16:15

Overview

Modern society is characterized by a growing awareness of risks and the unpredictable consequences of human actions. The question surrounding the “risk society” is whether or not this perspective condemns progress. Some argue that the risk society highlights the unexpected consequences and uncertainties associated with technological development and the expansion of knowledge. They call for responsible risk management and appropriate regulation to minimize the negative effects of progress. Others feel that this perspective can be seen as a condemnation of progress, emphasizing the benefits that technological development has brought to society. The debate revolves around how to reconcile the benefits of progress with risk management, by assessing both short- and long-term consequences. In this sense, we can legitimately ask questions such as: How can technological progress and innovation be reconciled with the management of risks to health, the environment and individual rights? What are the challenges of regulation in a risk society, where the consequences of human actions can be difficult to predict and assess? What are the responsibilities of companies and governments in managing the risks associated with technological progress?
